Does Your Religion or Beliefs Really Bring Peace?

Whatever your religion, political ideology or personal belief system, ask yourself a simple question: Does it bring peace into your life and the lives of others, or does it make you hurt people—physically or emotionally?

Believing strongly in something does not give anyone the right to impose it on others. Jihad, crusades, forced or coercive conversion, religious persecution, and violence carried out in the name of religion have all caused suffering and social division. But religion is not the only source of such harm. Secular and political ideologies, including communism, have also been used to justify oppression and violence against people because of what they believe.

Even when there is no physical violence, repeatedly telling people that their faith, identity or way of life is inferior, or pressuring them to abandon it, can cause real emotional harm and deepen social divisions.

You are free to follow your faith or your ideology, and to explain or discuss it with others. But when conviction turns into coercion, hatred, humiliation or violence, it destroys the very peace that many belief systems claim to seek.

Perhaps the real test of any religion or ideology is not what it teaches you to believe, but what it makes you do to other human beings.
