Lessons from Bangladesh: Rethinking India's Foreign Policy

In 1971, India played a decisive role in helping Bangladesh gain independence from Pakistan. This historic intervention came at a significant cost—both in terms of resources and human lives. However, over the decades, India's goodwill and support have not always translated into consistent strategic returns or long-term alignment from nations where Muslims form the majority population.

India must now reassess how it engages with such countries. Strategic support and investments should be aligned with mutual respect, reciprocity, and clearly defined interests. Blanket aid or uncritical generosity, especially where past experiences show limited returns, needs careful reconsideration.

It's time for India to balance idealism with realism, prioritizing national interest while fostering cooperation that is based on trust—not just historical sacrifice.
